A Wedding Day Timeline for Beautiful, Relaxed Photos

The secret to a relaxed wedding day, and beautiful photographs, is not a tighter schedule. It is a little breathing room. Here is a simple timeline that gives the light, and you, room to shine.

Getting ready (allow 1.5 to 2 hours). This is where the calm begins. Finish hair and makeup with time to spare, and have your details ready, the dress, the rings, the shoes, the flowers, so they can be photographed while you relax with the people you love.

First look or not (optional, 20 to 30 minutes). A private first look before the ceremony is a tender, unhurried moment, and it eases nerves. It is entirely your call. Either way, build in a buffer.

Ceremony (20 to 40 minutes). Try to hold your ceremony when the light is kind, and avoid harsh midday sun if your venue is open. A celebrant who keeps things warm and present helps enormously.

Couple portraits (30 to 45 minutes). This is your chance to slip away together for a few quiet minutes. It is often a couple’s favourite part of the day, a breath alone in the middle of the celebration.

Golden hour (15 to 20 minutes). If you can, step out again for the soft light just before sunset. Twenty minutes here can produce the most romantic frames of the whole day.

Reception. Speeches, first dance, the room in full swing. With coverage that runs long enough, none of it is rushed.

My one piece of advice. Leave more time than you think you need. A relaxed couple photographs beautifully, and the best images almost always come from the unhurried moments in between.
