Getting Married at Fitzroy Gardens: A Photographer’s Guide

Few places in Melbourne are as effortlessly romantic as Fitzroy Gardens. Heritage trees, sweeping lawns and green-shaded paths sit right on the edge of the city, which makes it a dream for couples who want nature and a city backdrop in one. Here is what I have learned photographing weddings here.

The light. The mature canopy gives soft, dappled light through much of the day, which is beautiful and forgiving. Late afternoon is especially lovely as the sun drops behind the trees.

The best spots. The avenues of elms make for timeless, leading-line portraits. The conservatory and the historic cottage add character and shelter if the weather turns. And the open lawns give you room for relaxed, candid frames with your guests.

A garden ceremony. An outdoor ceremony among the trees is hard to beat. Just remember to have a wet-weather plan, and to factor in that public gardens are shared spaces, which only adds to the lived-in, joyful feeling.

Getting around. Because everything is close together, you can move from ceremony to portraits to photos with guests without long travel, which keeps the day calm and gives us more time for the moments that matter.

A real Fitzroy Gardens wedding. I had the joy of photographing Aisling and Alex here, surrounded by colour and the gardens in full bloom. It remains one of my favourite Melbourne weddings to revisit.
